Linda Tellington-Jones Receives Honorary Doctorate Degree
Linda Tellington-Jones has been honored with a number of awards, including the Western States Hall of Fame, the Ronald Reagan Good Citizen Award, American Riding Instructors Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the Horsewoman of the Year Award, and the American Riding Instructors Association Master Instructor Award. She has also earned numerous accolades in the equine world, including a world record in endurance riding.
Though it’s been a few decades since she’s scurried down the halls to attend a class in school, on June 21 Linda Tellington-Jones received an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Wisdom University. This unique university, licensed by the State of California, is accredited by the World Association of Universities and Colleges and the Accreditation Commission International (ACI). The university, a global learning community, is committed to the pursuit of wisdom as a way of life.
Jim Garrison, the university’s president and chairman, says of this honor bestowed upon Linda: “Wisdom University is giving Linda an honorary PhD for her decades of work with the Tellington TTouch, which has contributed enormously to what we know about both animal and human healing, and for the work she has done to expand the boundaries of inter-species communication. She is joining the university as Chair of Interspecies Communication and the Director of the Institute for Interspecies Communication.”
Dr. Garrison is also founder and president of the Gorbachev Foundation/USA, which set the stage for the establishment in 1995 of the State of the World Forum, a San Francisco based non-profit institution created to establish a global network of leaders dedicated to creating a more sustainable global civilization.
Linda says of her affiliation with Dr. Garrison, “I worked closely with Jim when he was director for the Esalen Institute’s Soviet American Exchange program. In the 1980s and 1990s I went to Russia as a citizen ambassador 10 times, and taught TTouch to the Russian Olympic dressage and jumping teams. I also taught a 10-day course for Russian veterinarians at the Bitsa Olympic Center, as well as working with the Moscow Zoo and the Russian Academy of Science. I taught many times at the Moscow Hippodrome Racetrack, where my grandfather trained and raced horses in the 1920s. It was during my first trip to Russia that I began to think about developing an organization called Animal Ambassadors. The idea was sparked when I gave a presentation in Gorky Park to 165 people; it was then that I discovered the Russians’ deep love of animals.”
When asked if this doctorate degree would change anything for her, Linda smiled and said, “You never know! It may open doors for spreading my work even further worldwide. We’re now able to prove scientifically why TTouch works on so many levels — things that we’ve known intuitively for years. So now between the science and my new ‘title,’ perhaps we can venture forth in even more ways. That’s my hope — to bring the work of TTouch and Animal Ambassadors around the world even more every day. To be able to encourage children to relate to nature through Animal Ambassadors, and to affect the health and well-being of all species through TTouch — that’s a dream come true for me.”

Oakland Zoo Uses TTEAM to Help Baby Giraffes
All the giraffe calves at The Oakland Zoo undergo an extensive conditioning program to prepare them for a successful life in a captive husbandry situation.
Beginning when the calf is between five and fourteen days old, keepers initiate basic desensitization and simple operant conditioning behaviors. Keepers use a combination of traditional operant conditioning techniques and the Tellington Touch Equine Awareness Method (a training system for horses) to achieve sophisticated behavioral goals. Under this comprehensive system, calves are trained to participate in halter and leading exercises, trailer loading, target training, radiograph training, recall and name recognition. They learn to tolerate voluntary blood draws, farrier work, full physical examinations, and grooming.
